A Study of Morbidity Statistics in Urban Slum Population



Abstract
In April of 1972, the Yonhee Community Health Service was established for preventing disease and promoting health of slum population in Yonhee Dong, Seoul as a joint project between Yonsei University College of- Medicine and Seoul City Government. During the past four years, available effective measures for minimum curative, maximum preventive medicine and community development have been carried out.
The study implies the basic health survey for randomly selected households (627) and statistical analysis of diseases of out-patients at the Yonhee Community Health Service as follows:
The most dominant diseases were respiratory disease (36.4%), skin disease. (15.7%), gastrointestinal disorders (12.0%) and parasitic diseases (11.3%) in that order. About 75.4% of total illnesses were considered as preventable by simple teaching and primary care measures given by nursing or paramedical personnel. Of course, general improvement of sanitation such as water supplies, sewage disposal and nutrition were emphasized. In addition to morbidity statistics general characteristics for the selected population and distance between the clinic and each house were surveyed too.
